Green apple spinach banana smoothies are another tasty way I love to enjoy spinach, one of my favorite greens that I use daily in recipes like spinach tortillas, banana spinach oat pancakes, sweet spinach muffins, and spinach and arugula salad.

This smoothie features a creamy, light texture and a refreshing combination of flavors. It tastes naturally sweet from the banana and apple, complemented by a hint of brightness from the lemon juice.

Made with water, it’s completely dairy-free, making it a refreshing choice if you’re following a plant-based diet or just looking for a light, healthy drink.

    Ingredients

Wholesome plant-based ingredients for making homemade vegan banana spinach smoothie for breakfast
    • Spinach: Choose tender baby spinach for a milder flavor, or use regular spinach, just be sure to rinse it well before using.
    • Banana: Use a ripe, frozen banana for natural sweetness and a chilled, creamy texture.
    • Apple: Select your favorite apple. Opt for a sweeter variety if you prefer a sweeter smoothie.
    • Ground flaxseed (aka flaxseed meal) and chia seeds: Add healthy fats and fiber to your smoothie; hemp seeds can be used as an alternative to either.
    • Lemon juice: For the brightest flavor, use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Lime juice is an excellent substitute.
    • Water: Use cold water to help blend everything smoothly.

As always, you can find the full recipe with a list of ingredients with measurements in a printable recipe card at the end of this post.

    Storage

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking, as it may separate over time.

    Variations

    • Add protein: Blend in a scoop of your favorite vegan protein powder for an extra protein boost.
    • Add nuts: For added texture and healthy fats, try adding a handful of almonds or walnuts.
    • Add ginger: A small piece of fresh ginger adds a zesty, spicy kick.
    • Use coconut water: Swap the cold water with coconut water for a naturally hydrating smoothie with a hint of tropical flavor.
    • Add more greens: Add a handful of kale or collard greens alongside the spinach for an extra dose of leafy greens.
    • Tropical twist: Add a handful of frozen mango or pineapple chunks for a tropical flavor boost.

    Marinela's Tips

    • Use frozen fruit: For a creamier texture and a chilled smoothie, use frozen banana or apple slices.
    • If you want a sweeter smoothie, choose a sweeter apple variety like Fuji or Gala, or add a little natural sweetener such as maple syrup or agave.
    • Don’t skip the lemon: It adds a bright, refreshing flavor that balances the sweetness of the banana and apple.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Do spinach and apple go together?

Yes, spinach and apple pair wonderfully together. The sweetness of the apple balances the mild, earthy flavor of spinach, creating a refreshing and nutritious combination.

Does spinach need to be cooked for smoothies?

No, spinach does not need to be cooked for smoothies. Raw spinach, especially baby spinach, blends easily and adds a fresh, nutrient-packed boost without cooking.

Can I use frozen spinach instead of fresh?

You can use frozen spinach in your smoothie, but only about ½ cup since it's more tightly packed. There's no need to thaw it before blending.
