Ingredients
The ingredient list for making your own strawberry-flavored milk is short. All you need is a few wholesome pantry staples you may already have on hand.
- Fresh strawberries (you can use frozen, as well)
- Rolled / Old fashioned oats (Certified Gluten-Free if needed)
- Pure maple syrup (or liquid sweetener of choice)
- Vanilla extract (optional)
- Cold water
As always, you can find the full recipe with a list of ingredients with measurements in a printable recipe card at the end of this post.
Instructions
Here is how to make strawberry milk with real strawberries from scratch:
Combine. In a high-speed blender add fresh strawberries, rolled oats, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and water.
Blend. Blend on high for about 30 seconds to 1 minute or until the mixture becomes pink and creamy. Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed.
Strain. Strain the milk by pouring it over a nut milk bag, clean cheesecloth, or fine mesh strainer over a large bowl or pitcher. Squeeze out the remaining liquid with your hands.
Serve. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate. It will keep in the fridge for up to 2 days. If you want to drink your strawberry milk immediately, I recommend adding ice but the flavor is best when chilled for a few hours or overnight.
Hint: Don't over-blend since this will make the mixture slimy due to the presence of starches in the oats.
Substitutions
- This recipe work with both fresh and frozen strawberries.
- Instead of rolled oats, you can use quick oats. Don't use steel-cut oats for this recipe.
- You can replace maple syrup with agave nectar, date syrup, or your favorite liquid sweetened of choice. I don't recommend replacing maple syrup with granulated sugar since it will not dissolve properly in the mixture.
Variations
- Chocolate - add unsweetened cacao powder for a yummy chocolate strawberry flavor. Make sure to adjust the sweetener to compensate for the bitter, earthy cacao flavor.
- Vegan whipped cream or ice cream - to top the drink before serving.
- Protein boost - mix in your favorite vegan-friendly protein powder to enjoy it as a satisfying pre or post-workout drink.
Equipment
- High-powered blender
- Nut milk bag, cheesecloth, or fine mesh strainer
- Clean and dry sealed glass jar
Storage
Keep your flavored milk in a clean dry glass jar with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Shake or stir before drinking.
Note that the color may change due to oxidation, which happens to all-natural fruity drinks, and it's totally fine to drink it although it's best to enjoy it while fresh.
Top tips
- Use a high-speed blender to yield the smoothest consistency for your milk.
- As mentioned above, don't over-blend the mixture. If you have a powerful blender, 30 seconds is enough to get a silky smooth and creamy, not slimy milk consistency.
- Always use sweet, ripe strawberries to ensure your milk is fragrant and naturally sweetened with the need to add only a small quantity of maple syrup.
- Don't throw away the leftover pulp! You can use it to make smoothies, muffins, cookies, overnight oats, pancakes, you name it. See my no-bake almond milk pulp cake for inspiration.
- Make sure the jar or bottle is clean and completely dry before pouring in the milk.
How to use strawberry milk
- Drink it as a refreshing summer treat, a healthy alternative to cow's milk.
- Blend it in smoothies.
- Use it to make overnight oats.
- Mix it with crispy granola.
- Use it to bake muffins, pancakes, or cookies.
- Add a delectable strawberry twist to my luscious coconut shake.
